We are a group of people working towards seasteading the Baltic Sea, that is, establishing an autonomous community on the ocean. For more about seasteading as a concept, visit The Seasteading Institute. Currently our primary ways to encourage this are through meetings, events, and mailing list discussion.

Baltic Seasteading is a group for people interested in working actively with seasteading in its current state. At this point it means to pioneer the lifestyle itself. If you can’t see yourself living without a 7-Eleven on the corner or a bed that is completely stable, Baltic Seasteading is not the group for you yet.

But if you’re excited about helping grow a movement from the beginning and can imagine yourself living on the water in a few years, go sign up for the mailing list and check out our next meeting in the column to the right! We welcome people from all countries with a real interest in living anywhere in the Baltic Sea.

How will you seastead?
We don’t know the perfect way to seastead, but believe an incremental strategy has the best chance of success. Just to give you an idea, the first step for a person who would like to live on the sea could be to buy a boat and live in it while it’s anchored in a harbor.

Another step could be to join the seasteaders anchoring about 22 km off shore, where the sovereignty of the state starts fading out. From here it’s easy to keep your job on land as it only takes about 30 minutes to get back to the coast. When ready for the next step, you might move further away from the coast and be able to do all your work over the Internet, or you are self-employed and can take advantage of the freedom from taxes which exists there.

Your favorite strategy may be entirely different, but by pooling our research, resources, and actual experiences, together we will find a way that works.

Why the Baltic Sea?
Probably the greatest challenge of living at sea is dealing with waves, and the Baltic Sea has some of the lowest waves in the world while still big enough to contain international waters. This makes it a great place for seasteaders to start out and experiment with new structures and a new way of living.

Furthermore, the Baltic Sea is surrounded by nine different countries offering different legislation for new seasteaders to choose from when starting near the coast.
